Walk 11/10 Whitehorse Tr & Lunch at Moes

Discover the most scenic rail-trail in Snohomish County, the Whitehorse Trail between Arlington and Darrington. This multi-use trail follows the Stillaguamish River through the pastoral valley featuring views of the farmlands and the distant mountains. We'll cover a one-way route that will include a chance to visit the excellent memorial park on the site of the Oso Slide. Afterwards, we'll warm up in the comfortable confines of Moe's Coffee Shop in Darrington, and enjoy a tasty hot lunch.

Expected Conditions:

The Whitehorse Trail is in generally good condition, with a lot of fall leaves on the ground, and possibly some wet or muddy areas. The surface varies quite a bit. Near the Oso Slide Memorial, there's a nice wide paved path, which lasts for a short distance before changing to an unpaved path that has narrowed to a single file trail in places. Still, all of it if easy and level, and shouldn't pose any difficulties. We'll start at the slide memorial, allowing a half-hour or so to tour the excellent and moving displays and artworks. Then we'll head east on the trail toward Darrington. You won't walk all the way to Darrington (that's ~11 miles), but you can go roughly 3, 5, or 6 miles, your option. The van will move ahead to various check-in points at those mileage intervals. Stop when you feel you've gone far enough.

Other Considerations:

Good traction hiking shoes or boots are recommended, and the more waterproof they are, the better. Trekking poles probably aren't necessary here, but you're welcome to use them if you want. After everyone has been picked up at the conclusion of their walking route, we'll drive into Darrington to stop at Moe's. Here is their menu for lunch. Note that you'll have to scroll down past all their drinks and breakfast offerings to find the lunch items.
