Walk 10/7 Lake Keechelus Fall Color Walk

This is a walk on the "P2C" which refers to the Palouse to Cascades Trail, formerly known as John Wayne or Iron Horse Trail. It's the route of the cross-state railroad that now is a multi-use trail. The section passing 6-mile long Lake Keechelus is one of the most scenic parts, and makes a very leisurely stroll through the Central Cascades, with the vine maple providing brilliant color alongside the trail. We'll start at the eastern end of the lake, and how far you go is up to you. Go out and back the way you came, or if you feel energetic, go all the way to the Hyak Trailhead at the west end of the lake-- about a 7-mile walk. Sorry, no bikes on this trip, just walkers.

Expected Conditions:

Everything looks great for our walk. The Palouse to Cascades Trail is fully open, and the fall colors should be great. We'll start from a forest service road on the southeastern end of Lake Keechelus, elevation 2500 feet. The trail is wide, level, smooth crushed gravel and will present no difficulties. I will walk about 1.5 to 2 miles with the group, and will then return to the van. You can return with me, or continue onward toward the Hyak Trailhead, which will give you about a 7-mile walk end-to-end. I'll have the van there at the end for those choosing that option.

Other Considerations:

Any sort of comfortable walking shoes should be fine for this walk. Trekking poles probably aren't necessary for most people. Pack food and water in your pack, and plan to take a lunch break on the trail at the Cold Creek Backcountry Campsite (has picnic table), which is about 4.5 miles into your walk.

I need all trip participants to update and submit a Hold Harmless Form for 2025.  Click here to go to the form page.
