"A great place to hike" is not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Bellevue, but this trip might make you change your mind. The Lake to Lake Trail is a route from Lake Sammamish to Lake Washington that connects several parks and green belts as it traverses the city. The route is a mixture of sidewalks, wide easy pathways, and natural-surface trails that are often in quiet, secluded surroundings. At times, you'll forget you're in the city. Among the features along the route are the Lake Hills Greenbelt, Kelsey Creek Park, Bellevue Botanic Gardens, the Downtown Park, and the wharf at Meydenbauer Park. We'll do a one-way route and I'll have a helper to move to van from our start point to our finish point.
Expected Conditions:
The surfaces on this hike range from city sidewalks to natural surface trails, and include some boardwalks, dirt roads, and paved paths. We start from Lake Sammamish and work our way westward. I will lead the group, while an extra helper will shuttle the van forward as we go. Expect a fun variety of park spaces, neighborhoods, and downtown districts.
Other Considerations:
Almost all of the route can be done in any kind of comfortable footwear, but there are some parts that are natural surface trails with some ups and downs. Most of it should be fine without trekking poles, but some may want to have them. Pack water and food, and plan to have a lunch break at Kelsey Creek Park, about halfway through. You can leave your lunch in the van, because you'll have access to it when we stop to eat. Do take water and a snack with you as you hike, to take care of those needs. If anyone tires before the end, it will be possible to stop at one of the check-in points along the way (roughly at 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 of the way along).
