Here's a lightly-traveled trail near Skykomish that follows a rushing mountain river through scenic forest, and offers a peaceful alternative to the packed-out trails typical on summer weekends. Come witness the improvements recently made to this trail to save it from falling into abandonment. There's no grand climax view at the end, just a nice tranquil valley that lets the sights and sounds of nature wash over you.
Expected Conditions:
Road and trail conditions should be good. Most of this trail follows the route of a mining road that dates back to the 1890's. The trail is occasionally rocky, occasionally brushy, and may have a few blowdowns to step over, but there shouldn't be anything difficult. We'll hike out for 3 miles, ending at Coney Creek, and return the way we came. We start at about 1300 feet in elevation, and the high point is about 2100 feet. Most of the trail is forested and shady. Bugs may be out, so bring the repellant.
Other Considerations:
Wear good traction hiking shoes or boots, and use trekking poles to help with the rougher sections. Pack water and food in your pack, and plan to have lunch when we reach the turnaround point at Coney Creek. You can check the air quality numbers at this site. Note that I will be backpacking in California from the 17th to the 20th, and may not be able to respond to messages.
I need all trip participants to update and submit a Hold Harmless Form for 2026. Click here to go to the form page.
