Hike 6/5 Dosewallips River Trail & Falls

June is a great time to head over to the peninsula and go hiking along a great river into the eastern edges of Olympic National Park. The Dosewallips Trail offers just that. We'll head past Quilcene and along Hood Canal, driving to the trailhead next to the river in forest at barely 500 feet above sea level. The road used to go several more miles until a washout shut things down a few decades ago. But now the road is slowly evolving into a nice, mostly smooth trail that makes for relatively easy miles. You can go all the way to the falls (pictured) and do 11 miles round trip, or stop when you've gone far enough. Things to look for on this trip: beautiful low-elevation forest, with plenty of old growth, interesting rock formations of "pillow lava", a multitude of different wildflowers and forest plants, the many and varied views of the Dosewallips River, perhaps some elk or other wildlife, and maybe some wild rhodies in bloom too. Trip fee includes cost of ferries and national park permits.

Expected Conditions:

Conditions on the old Dosewallips Road-turned-trail should be excellent. Most of the route is on the old road, which now resembles a wide, smooth trail. There's a short detour trail to get around a road washout section, but everything is easy and never is it very steep. It's roughly 5.5 miles (about 2.5 hours) to reach the falls, if you want to go that far. The best option for a shorter hike is to go to the Elkhorn Campsite about 2.5 miles from the start. There is a side trail that leads to campsites next to the river. You can go any distance you like, but between the 2.5 mile point and the falls at 5.5 miles, there's not really any noteworthy landmarks for a climax to your walk.

Other Considerations:

Wear good traction hiking shoes or boots for the hike. Trekking poles may be helpful at times, but some may feel no need for them on the mostly-smooth old road. Pack water and food in your pack, and plan to take a lunch break somewhere out on the trail. We will be taking the 7:55 ferry from Edmonds to Kingston. Contact me if you'd like to be picked up at the Edmonds Goodwill parking lot (behind QFC). We'll be returning on either the 5:30 or 6:10 ferry, most likely.

I need all trip participants to update and submit a Hold Harmless Form for 2025.  Click here to go to the form page.
