Hike 6/30 Double Bluff - Whidbey Island

Enjoy a healthy midweek getaway by taking a brisk walk on one of Whidbey Island's finest beaches. The 400-foot high bluffs above the shore will crane your neck, and views of snowy Mt. Rainier, the Olympics, Three Fingers and Whitehorse Mountain will delight your eyes. Watch for marine animals, shore birds, and maybe even some kiteboarders too. There's a "minus tide" on this particularly day, so it's a perfect time to roam the beach. Registration includes cost of round trip on the Mukilteo-Clinton ferry.

Expected Conditions:

Should be an ideal day for exploring the beach at Double Bluff near Clinton. The tide is forcast to be -1.9 feet at 11:40 in the morning, so the beach should be wide, and there should be numerous exposed tidepools. Here's a good trip report from May when the tides were also super low. The beach surface is generally good here, though expect some rocky areas, softer sand, and a few driftlogs to step over in places. If you go 2 miles west aloong the beach, you come to a point, which is a good turnaround spot, making for a four mile round trip. I encourage you to explore as much as you like-- it's not imperative that you do the 4 miles. We'll all wind up at the same place at the end of the hike.

Other Considerations:

Wear good traction hiking shoes or boots, preferably waterproof since you'll be near pools of saltwater. Trekking poles are generally not needed, but can be taking if you fell more comfortable. Pack a little water and food in your pack, and plan to take a break around mid-day for lunch on the beach. We'll be taking the 9:30 ferry from Mukilteo in the morning, and returning on the 2:35 ferry from Clinton in the afternoon. Let me know if you'd like to be picked up near the Mukilteo (Rosehill) Community Center.

I need all trip participants to update and submit a Hold Harmless Form for 2026.  Click here to go to the form page.
