Hike 6/23 Hurricane Ridge, Easy & gentle
Tuesday, June 23, 6:15 AM - 6:30 PM
up to 3 miles, 300 feet elevation gain.
Meet at Everett Station Park & Ride Lot --
B

It's the premier mountain viewpoint of Olympic National Park, and this trip is designed for those who want their views without having to work too hard for them. We'll stick to the milder trails, go slow, and take time to bask in the glorious surroundings. You'll have to do some ups and downs-- after all, there aren't any flat trails up there. But we'll stay off the real steep and rugged trails, leaving those for the more energetic types. If you want a longer trip in this area, I'll have a Klahhane Ridge hike offering later in the summer. Note that the trip fee includes cost of ferry and national park permit fees. Participants may be subject to a separate entrance fee ($15) if they don't have any type of park or senior pass.
Expected Conditions:
The Hurricane Ridge Road is open to the large parking area at the top (near the former visitor center). There's a construction project causing midweek closures of the remaining section of road to Hurricane Hill Trailhead. This won't stop our trip from going, but it will eliminate the option of driving out to Hurricane Hill Trailhead for a short walk on that trail. Other trails are unaffected, and are snowfree and in great condition for summer hiking. We will do the 1.5-mile round trip to Sunrise Point. There's about 200 feet elevation gain, and some sections have a moderate level of steepness. Part of the path is paved, but other portions can be a bit rocky and require good traction footwear. Since the Hurricane Hill Trail is inaccessible, I'm considering doing a drive and very short hike along the Obstruction Point Road as another possible activity.
Other Considerations:
Wear good traction hiking shoes or boots for our hike(s). Trekking poles will be helpful for most of you. It's likely we'll have our lunch break next to the van rather than out on the trail. The bugs are affecting some people now, so if that's an issue for you, be sure to bring bug repellant. Note the early start time, so that we can make the 7:10 ferry from Edmonds in the morning. This will put us in the national park early in the day and should ensure that we'll arrive before the parking lot fills up. It should also give us time if people want to make a 10-15 minute stop at the bakery in Kingston. Several of you in the group live closer to Edmonds than Everett, so if you'd like to be picked up on the way to the ferry, the meeting place now is on Pine Street, just west of Highway 104. Use this Google Maps link to Schaefer Community Garden. Please notify me ahead of time if you want to be picked up there. The pickup time should be appoximately 6:45.
I need all trip participants to update and submit a Hold Harmless Form for 2026. Click here to go to the form page.
