If you're looking for a spring getaway to the east side of the mountains that's got great wildflowers and views but not too much elevation gain, here's your hike. Located just above Leavenworth on Chelan-Douglas Land Trust land, the trails here will delight your eyes with views of the surrounding green valleys and snow-capped peaks, and the wildflower show should be in full swing. In addition to hiking the Mountain Home Ridge trails, we'll stroll along the Leavenworth Riverwalk in the afternoon, concluding with a stop at the Danish Bakery (or if you prefer, ice cream at Das Sweet Shoppe).
Expected Conditions:
Conditions should be just right for our trip to the trails on Mountain Home Ridge. The snow is gone, the trail is drying out, and the flowers are blooming. We start at a gated side road off the Mountain Home Road a couple miles south of Leavenworth, at elevation about 2000 feet. The gated road climbs up to a ridge, then gives way to a trail that tops out just below 2600 feet. This is open forest with plenty of views overlooking the lower Icicle River Valley. We'll take a couple of side trails to various viewpoints, and wind up doing close to 4 miles. Afterward, we'll make the short drive into Leavenworth, stop at Enchantment Park on the Wenatchee River, and stroll along the easy river walk trail into the heart of town (about 1 mile).
Other Considerations:
Wear good traction hiking shoes or boots for the hike to Mountain Home Ridge. Trekking poles will be helpful for the ups and downs. Pack food and water in your pack, and plan to have lunch out on the trail. The walk later on the river walk trail is easy and can be done in any comfortable footwear. You can plan to spend about 30-45 minutes in Leavenworth checking out the bakery, the ice cream shop, or whatever interests you. I'll bring the van over from Enchantment Park and pick up the group in downtown.
