Hike 3/28 Hemlock Trail - Raptor Ridge

Here's one of the best hikes in the Chuckanut Mountains, just south of Bellingham. It's a steady climb from Arroyo Park on an excellent trail that was once a narrow logging road, through a forest canopy with every shade of green and them some. There are curious rock gardens, some huge overhanging boulders, and yes, the occasional hawk, eagle, or other raptors. The climax is reached at a cliff top with views that include Baker and Rainier on clear days. It's a grand lunch spot, and hard to believe you're only a few miles from a busy city. In many states, this could be national park-quality.

Expected Conditions:

The trails here in the Chuckanuts should be snow-free and in good condition for our hike. Our route to the viewpoint on Raptor Ridge climbs steadily at a moderate grade, generally not super-steep, and is usually well-maintained. There could be the usual early-season messes like wet or muddy spots, or an occasional downed tree or limb. We start at Arroyo Park, elevation 100 feet, and the viewpoint on top is at about 1600 feet. We return the same way we came. If the weather is decent, expect plenty of company on this trail, as it is popular with the Bellingham locals.

Other Considerations:

Wear good traction hiking shoes or boots for this hike (the more waterproof, the better). Trekking poles will be useful given the ups and downs, and occasional tricky footing. Pack food and water in your pack and plan to eat while out on the trail.
