Hike 9/26 Gobblers Knob- Mt. Rainier NP
11 miles, 2600 feet elevation gain.
Trip description
Visit Mount Rainier's "forgotten" lookout, on a 5485-foot rocky knob just inside the western boundary of the national park. Even on a busy weekend, only a few parties visit this scenic spot. The route to the lookout cabin begins on the West Side Road, and walks the old abandoned roadway for the first 3.5 miles. From there, a trail leads one mile to pretty Lake George, and another mile to the top of Gobblers Knob. There are great views not only of Rainier, but also St. Helens, the Olympics, and Mt. Hood if it's clear enough. Trip fee includes park permit cost. Bring a national park or federal lands pass if you have one.
