Hike 9/20 Glacier Basin - Mt. Rainier
JUST ADDED - alternate for Grand Park. 6. 5 miles, 1600 feet elevation gain.
Trip description
The originally scheduled hike on this day to Grand Park will not be happening because of ongoing fire closures in that area of Mt. Rainier National Park. As an alternative, we'll do a somewhat similar hike that is nearby and is equally as scenic. Glacier Basin is right at the foot of Rainier's northeast glaciers, and is reached by an excellent trail from White River Campground. Access is open to this trail and should remain so. The trail begins in lovely old growth forest and ascends steadily but gradually as it crosses several cascading streams. After crossing through a few small meadows, you eventually break out into the open after about 3.3 miles and have views of the basin and of Rainier high above. They are usually marmots and other animals to look for, and plenty of opportunities for further explorations in the basin. Trip fee includes cost of national park permit.
