Hike 3/12 Point Defiance Park

5 - 6 miles, 500 feet elevation gain.

Trip description

Let's make the journey to the South Sound to marvel at the green of the beautiful old growth forests found throughout this urban oasis in Tacoma. We'll do a 4-mile loop around most of the park, savoring the forests, beaches, views, and spring's first flowers. We'll get to enjoy the increased quiet and solitude owing to the absence of vehicle traffic on the park's outer loop drive, which has been closed permanently. This gives much of the park a more remote, near-wilderness feel. And take note if you haven't been here in years-- the new (as of 2019) Frank Herbert Trail and Dune Peninsula now occupies the rehabilitated Asarco smelter site on Commencement Bay. It's a standout new feature of the park, and I'll definitely give you time to check it out.
