Walk 1/3 Skagit River Bald Eagle Boat Tour
Meeting with our guide Luke from Skagit Eagles at the Howard Miller County Park in Rockport.

After shuttling upriver to Marblemount via Highway 20, we put in near the Cascade River Road bridge.

Eagle sightings began 30 seconds after launch

Our group split up with 7 in one boat and 5 in the other

The guide did all the paddling, while we sat back an took in the scenery. Note the propane space heaters

Every couple of minutes, we'd see more eagles in the trees alongside the river.

Many homes along the river were barely spared from the December floods, but a few were not so lucky.

Bobbing down the Skagit

Most eagles in this area have migrated from Canada

Rain and clouds diminished the visibility, but still plenty of great views

Saw several heron along the river banks too

Aerial serenade

Fly-by

Everybody keeping their eyes peeled for the next one

The eagles are accustomed to the boats drifting past, and didn't seem to be bothered much.

A property of the south side of the river that lost quite a bit of shoreline to the river

High eroded river banks tell a geologic story

Note the dark layers in the soil--signs of past volcanic lahars that swept through the valley centuries ago

So many logs dislodged by the flood have gotten caught up in new places, making careful navigation very important

Some eagles had a tree to themselves...

...While others made it a group affair
