Hike 9/26 Gobblers Knob Lookout
Nearly an hour-long wait to get into Mt. Rainier National Park today

Parking at the Westside Road closure point. Some took bikes to cover the 3.8 miles of road up to the trailhead.

Mountainside above the Westside Road

Rainier comes into view. Fresh snow had fallen the day before.

Tahoma Creek flowing down its rocky valley. Glacial outburst floods occasionally surge down this valley.

Walking up the Westside Road, not far from the Gobblers Knob Trailhead

Unusual rack for the bikes at Gobblers Knob Trailhead

Trail sign at beginning of the trail

Trail was mostly very smooth and nicely-maintained

Nice forest hiking on the way to Lake George

Lake George was reached after one mile of trail. The lookout is 1.5 miles from here

The cool crisp fall air created whisps of fog on the lake surface

Approaching Gobblers Knob Lookout

How's the view up there?

Pretty nice, as it turns out. Here, looking south at the neighboring Mount Wow.

A distant view southward revealed High Rock, and way back there, Mount Hood.

Lookout cabin wasn't staffed or open, but still had a view inside.

Goat Rocks peaks to the SE, resplendant in fresh snow.

Clouds rolled up against Rainier most of the time, so never had a clear view from the lookout

The lookout was built in the 1930's by the CCC, and with occasional restorations, is still in great shape today.

St. Helens was visible too

Waiting for the views to change
