Hike 6/14 Lost Lake, Chuckanuts, top-down
View over the treetops from Cyrus Gates Overlook, at start of hike

Descending the steep stairs on the Rock Trail

Going past one of many sandstone walls on the Rock Trail

The rock walls are part of a geologic feature called a syncline, and are quite old.

Broken pieces from the walls have wedged themselves into the forest, with the trail cleverly routing through them

The small cavities in the rock are called tafoni. Some are deep enough to climb into

Looking from the inside out of a tafoni formation. They are created from the breakdown of the rock by carbonic acid, which naturally occurs in rainwater

You could have fit 3 or 4 people inside the cave

Goats Beard

Columbine

Tiger Lily

Lost Lake view from the overlook where we had lunch

On the North Lost Lake Trail in forest

Nice shady trail kept the temperature comfortable

She was not able to move the boulder off the trail
