Hike 4/4 Dungeness Spit
Welcome sign at the Dungeness Wildlife Refuge. Lots of people out enjoying the refuge today

After a 10-minute walk through forest, the views of the spit and the distant lighthouse arrive

Sights of the snow-capped Olympics were ever-present

Deer prints on the beach

About halfway to the lighthouse

A natural playground of driftwood

Not far to go now. It took most of the group a little over 2 hours to reach the lighthouse.

Oystercatcher hiding in the rocks near the tide line

The lighthouse was one of the first in Washington, built in 1857

The lighthouse keepers' quarters. Members of the Lighthouse Society pay to spend a week here taking care of the grounds.

Spring flowers were in bloom around the lighthouse

After climbing 75 steps or so up a spiral staircase, the light room is reached

360 degree views from the top of the lighthouse. Looking back to the Olympic Peninsula here

Mount Baker view from the lighthouse. Interestingly, the spit now extends well beyond the site of the lighthouse, which wasn't originally the case.

Making our way back in mid-afternoon sunshine
