Hike 4/24 Umtanum Creek Falls & Ridge (overflow trip)
The trail to Umtanum Falls goes through a riparian area next to the creek.

In contrast to the surrounding tree-less terrain, Umtanum Creek hosts a nice pine forest.

Sizing up the crossing of Umtanum Creek near the falls

Crossing the creek gave access to the best views of the falls on the other side

Below the falls, in a shady gorge next to basalt cliffs

Umtanum Creek Falls. This is about 7 miles upstream from where the creek flows into Yakima River.

A look around the falls area. Very different than most west-side falls.

Umtanum Creek Falls

The lip of the falls. Notice the trekking stuck there. I "rescued" it for one of our group.

Another vantage point of the falls

Burned trees, remnants from a fire that swept through in 2020.

Carefully rock-hopping across Umtanum Creek

Rocky section of trail

Balsamroot garden in the sky. Stuart Range is the backdrop.

We walked about 2 miles each way along the ridge. Great flower show!

Looks very plain, but the charm is in the details

Lupine

Bighead Clover

Mount Rainier views too

Phlox and a rock

Classic ridgetop shrub-steppe terrain
