Join me on a beautiful old-growth forest hike in one of my favorite state parks. The appeal here is the peacefulness, the ancient trees, and what it DOESN'T have-- crowds of people rushing by to get that must-have social media picture. This overlooked gem of a park on the White River outside Enumclaw honors the legacy of the Federation of Washington Womens' Clubs, who worked to save this land from timber interests back in the 1920's. A system of gentle trails leads through the forest and along the banks of the White River. There's also an excellent interpretive center and picnic area. It's a relaxing spot for a brief summer getaway when so many nearby trails are crowded and hectic.
Expected Conditions:
All trails at the Fed Forest State Park are in excellent condition. There had been a lot of blowdowns from last winter's storms, but everything has been cleared, and the trail is good to go. We'll start at the park interpretive center and make a loop route of between 3 and 4 miles. Elevation is near 1600 feet the entire time. We'll be in nice shady forest the entire time.
Other Considerations:
Trail conditions should be good enough that almost any comfortable walking shoes will work fine. Trekking poles are optional--many will find that they aren't really needed. Pack some water and food in your pack and plan to have a lunch break out on the trail somewhere. Bugs may be a factor, so pack the repellant.
