Have you seen all the trolls yet? Or maybe you'd like to make another visit to these charming creations? Or just hearing about them and wondering what's the deal? It's part of an ambitious public art project featuring the work of a Danish environmental artist named Thomas Dambo. His whimsical creations are crafted from recycled materials, and are meant to underscore the ways in which the natural world wastes nothing, and finds use for everything. Five giant trolls are currently found in publicly-accessible natural areas in Issaquah, West Seattle, and on Bainbridge and Vashon Islands (plus one in the middle of Ballard). Let's go check out these unique and thought-provoking works of art-- and get in some nice exercise while doing so. There are no long hikes to get to the trolls, but we'll fashion a healthy bit of walking during our discoveries. Your trip fee covers the cost of the three ferries involved in this journey, and it's a bit of a long day, but we'll make the grand tour to all five in the Puget Sound Region. Let the good times troll!
Expected Conditions:
The walks to each troll vary somewhat, but all are fairly short, with the longest of all being about a one-mile round trip. There should be no obstacles other than maybe some wet or muddy ground if it rains. We'll start in Issaquah with a 10-minute walk to the first troll. Then we go to West Seattle and do the one-mile round trip to troll #2. We then ferry to Vashon Island to see troll #3, which is right near the parking lot. Next we have to ferry to Southworth on Kitsap Peninsula, then drive to Bainbridge Island, where we see troll #4, also right near the parking lot. We'll ferry a third time, arriving in Seattle, and then drive to Ballard to see troll #5.
Other Considerations:
Ordinary walking shoes will suffice for this trip, although you could encounter some wet muddy ground around the trolls. Our lunch break will come on Vashon Island before visiting troll #3. You can pack a lunch, or purchase food in the Vashon Village. There's a bakery, a Subway, and a Thriftway in the village.
I need all trip participants to update and submit a Hold Harmless Form for 2026. Click here to go to the form page.
