This will be a walk on arguably the best part of the 19-mile King County Parks trail that follows the Green River from Tukwila to Auburn. The paved path has a 6-mile stretch through Kent that hugs the river bank and goes through a succession of greenspaces, parks, and a golf course, while keeping a pleasant distance away from most busy streets and highways. It's a great walk in any season, and has some views that may surprise you. After our walk concludes, we'll stop in at the nearby Kent Station Shopping Center, where there are numerous small restaurants and eateries where you can warm up and grab a tasty lunch.
Expected Conditions:
The flood damage that severed the Green River Trail was located in Tukwila, north of the area we plan to walk. To the best of my knowledge, the trail will be open and is walkable, although King County Parks provides very little help about current trail conditions. If I can learn more, I'll post it here. Our plan is to begin in Kent, where S. 200th Street crosses the Green River. The trail continues south from there for a little over 6 miles to a trailhead near the intersection of Hwys 167 & 516. The trail is paved the whole way, and is wide, flat, and easy walking. All busy streets are crossed via underpasses, and much of the surroundings are parklands and golf course.
Other Considerations:
Wear comfortable walking shoes for this paved walking path (hiking boots aren't necessary). Trekking poles shouldn't be necessary. Take along a little water and a snack to get you through the 2.5 hours or so on the trail. this is a one-way walk, so I will be shuttling the van forward as you walk. There will be check-in points at Mile 1.6, 3.5, and 4.8, and the finish is at about 6.3 miles. After the walk, we will drive a short distance to Kent Station, an open-air mall near Kent's light rail station, which has over 20 eateries clustered in a small radius. You can peruse your lunch options by looking at the station directory here.
