This snowshoe tour will explore the popular Gold Creek area at Snoqualmie Pass, but will travel farther into the valley on the Gold Creek Trail, rather than doing the Gold Creek Pond Loop. It's still a nice gentle route with no steep hills, but should offer more of a wilderness feel, with fewer people, and a quieter setting. If you need snowshoes, don't buy a cheap pair. They can be rented from me for $20. Use the listing on the trips page that says "Snowshoe Rental for 2024-25 trips."
Expected Conditions:
There is some snow cover at the Gold Creek area near Snoqualmie Pass, but it is thin in many areas. No matter, this should bode well for our trip, as we will delve deeper into the valley and are likely to find better snow as we go. It will be difficult to say exactly how much snow we will have, so everyone should be prepared to either walk with the snowshoes on their feet, or perhaps on their packs. Make sure your pack has some sort of capability for strapping on the snowshoes if we need to carry them. Those who have traction devices may want to pack those too, since they will probably be helpful for traction if we're not wearing snowshoes. We'll be parking at the Gold Creek Sno-Park, or perhaps the picnic area by the pond if the road is still driveable. We'll walk the Gold Creek Road to it's end, and continue on the Gold Creek Trail portion. Most of the terrain is fairly flat with occasional slight ups and downs.
Other Considerations:
Consult my handy Snowshoer's Checklist to help you organize your gear for the trip. Remember, particularly if this is your first snow trip of the season, to take time to check over your winter gear. Are all your snowshoe parts intact and ready to go? Do your trekking poles have the large snow baskets attached? How are your snow boots? Waterproof? Make sure you don't have any unpleasant surprises at the trailhead. Pack food and water in your pack, and plan to have a lunch break out on the snow.
