Hike 8/27 High Lakes / Mazama Ridge

Wildflowers, views of The Mountain, sparkling lakes, and grand forests-- everything you want in a Mount Rainier hike is all found here. We'll hike from Reflection Lake on the south side of The Mountain, doing a modified loop that takes in Inspiration Saddle, Faraway Rock, Mazama Ridge and the High Lakes Trail. We top out at nearly over 6,000 feet in a huge meadow with great views all around. It's prime hiking season at the park, so let's get an early start and beat the crowds. Trip cost includes park permit fees.

Expected Conditions:

All trails in this area are open and in excellent condition. We start at Reflection Lakes, elevation 4900 feet, beginning in forest and gradually transitioning to wide open meadows filled with wildflowers. The high point, and likely lunch spot, is at 5600 feet with great views of Mt. Rainier. There's an option to continue higher if you like, going another mile and roughly 400 feet higher. Expect lots of people on the trails, especially if the weather is nice.

Other Considerations:

Wear good traction hiking shoes or boots for this trail. Trekking poles will come in handy for all the ups and downs. Pack water and food in your pack and plan to have a lunch break out on the trail. If you have a national parks pass or senior pass, bring that, as it will help us avoid any park entrance fees.

I need all trip participants to update and submit a Hold Harmless Form for 2026.  Click here to go to the form page.
