Hike 5/21 Barclay Lake

Experience a truly spectacular setting reached by a surprisingly short, gentle trail off Highway 2 near Index. Lying at the base of the 3,000-foot vertical north wall of Mount Baring, Barclay Lake is a perfect spot for relaxing and pondering the majesty of nature. The road and trail were closed for a time after the Bolt Creek Fire of 2022, but things are open once again, and although evidence of the fire is apparent on the drive to the trailhead, most of the area surrounding the lake and trail was not affected. Come out with us and take a look this spring.

Expected Conditions:

It's a great time to do this trail. Conditions are excellent, the trail is fairly dry, and there are no significant obstacles. We start from the end of the forest service road at 2300 feet. The lake is reached in two miles and sits at about 2400 feet. The trail has a few mild ups and downs, but is generally easy. Spring wildflowers should be nice. The Tuesday crowds shouldn't be too bad, maybe only a dozen or so vehicles at the trailhead (there were around 60 on Mother's Day!).

Other Considerations:

Wear good traction hiking shoes or boots. Trekking poles may be useful at times, but in general this isn't a rough trail. Pack food and water in your pack, and plan to have lunch at the lake. If it's a particularly nice day, maybe bring some extra footwear for a little wading time in the lake.
