Bike 9/14 Foothills Trail - Pierce County
Saturday, September 14, 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM
15 - 25 miles, minimal elevation gain.
Meet at Everett Station Park & Ride Lot --
A
This will be a gentle ride from South Prairie to Puyallup on a paved path that follows the line of an old railroad, gently descending through river valleys in the shadow of Mount Rainier. The eastern end is more rural, consisting of a corridor of trees or alongside open fields. As you ride closer to Puyallup, the setting is more suburban, but the trail route generally stays off of any busy highways or streets. Ride the one-way 15 mile route east to west, or to get a few more miles, turn around and return eastward part of the way. Any bike in good working condition should be fine on this trail. Remember to bring your helmet and a few tools to deal with the unexpected.
Expected Conditions:
The Foothills Trail is open from South Prairie to Puyallup with only one short detour around a construction project. The ride is all paved, has no steep hills, and is roughly half in rural settings (east half), and half in urban settings (west half). Much of the trail closely parallels Highway 162, so do expect traffic noise at times. There is a gradual loss of elevation riding westbound, and a gradual gain riding eastbound. Trailheads and park areas are frequently encountered along the trail, so port-a-potties are often available if you pay attention. A good portion of the ride will be out in the open sunshine, but there are shady, wooded areas at times also.
Other Considerations:
I will start everyone at South Prairie (mile 0), then drive the van & trailer to Orting for a check in along the trail there (mile 7.5), and again at East Puyallup (mile 15). I would expect most will be ready for lunch at that point. You can leave your lunch in the van, and get it when you reach East Puyallup. Just take water and a snack with you on the ride. After lunch, you turn around and head back in the direction you came from. Ride a little more, or go all the way back to South Prairie for a 30-mile day. Remember to check your bike's condition before the trip. An air pump will be available at the start if you need it. Bring your helmet, a spare inner tube, and a few tools just in case. Note that you need to ride with caution because of the numerous street crossings from Orting to Puyallup. Also, expect the trail to be busy if it's a nice day, particularly after lunchtime.
