Located atop a 4800-foot-high ridge south of Ashford, High Hut is a backcountry hut that is part of the Mount Tahoma Ski Trails system. You reach it by climbing steadily up a forest road that goes from bottom to top. The views, of Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams, the Olympics, and especially ofMt. Rainier, are stellar. This tour is best in spring, when the odds favor better weather and views. There will still be plenty of snow for snowshoeing, or skiing if you prefer. The hut is usually rented out to people staying overnight, but as day trippers, we will have access to it while we are at the top. There's access to a kitchen in the hut, and a stove is available for hot water or anything you'd like to bring to heat up.
