Hike 7/20 Cypress Island Getaway

Sorry, this trip is full. Contact Andy to be added to the waiting list

3-8 miles, 700 feet gain +

Trip description

Let's spend a day exploring a nearby place that few casual visitors ever see. Cypress is one of the larger islands in the San Juan archipelago, and because it has no regular ferry service, there are relatively few people there. Several thousand acres on the island were spared development, and are now managed by Washington DNR. A great trail system criss-crosses the mostly-forested hills and valleys of the island. We'll travel there on a charter boat with Island Express Charters out of Anacortes. There'll be no ferry lines, no extra waiting, just a direct ride to go enjoy the charms of Cypress. Our day on the island will begin at Pelican Beach on the northeast shore, and feature a 3-mile, 700-foot-gain hike to Eagle Cliff, the premier viewpoint on the island. The panorama here is one of the best views in Washington --one that very few hikers ever get to see. After hiking to Eagle Cliff, you'll have options depending on your level of ambition. Trails can be taken to three different lakes and along stretches of scenic shoreline. You can also opt to relax on the beach, kick your heels up, and listen to the waves wash against the sand. We'll be picked up by Island Express roughly 8 hours after we arrive, and make the easy trip back to Anacortes.
