Hike 7/15 Thornton Lakes

9 miles, 3200 feet elevation gain.

Trip description

This well-built national park trail near Newhalem leads to a string of jaw-droppingly beautiful alpine lakes set under the jagged peaks of the North Cascades. These lakes, which sometimes don't melt out until mid-July, are set in a glacially-carved basin, where there are nearby peaks with names such as Mt. Triumph, Mt. Despair, and Mt. Terror. It's scenery on a truly grand scale. If you're up for 3000 feet of elevation gain or more, you'll certainly be rewarded for your effort here.
