Walk 2/9 Northwest Trek Wildlife Park
Arriving at Trek in the morning to a light dusting of snow.

Began by checking out the birds

Golden Eagle

Most of the birds housed here are disabled in some way, and wouldn't fare well in the wild

Snowy Owl

and a snowy eagle

The tram wasn't operating today, but we were able to do an escorted drive through in my van

The escort drive follows a similar route that the tram takes through the sprawling "free range area."

The easiest sightings in the free range area were the bison

The bison herd actually helps keep the open meadows healthy, they're the "gardeners of the park."

Bison calf born last summer.

A hefty male bison. Glad it didn't decide to ram my van.

A frozen-over wetland in the free range area

Got a quick peek at a couple of caribou. The guide in the lead car didn't even notice them.

Back at the woodland animal exhibit, playing peek-a-boo with a badger.

Many animal were comfortably ensconced in their dens, like this beaver

Badgers were huddled together on this damp, chilly day

Taking a close look at a beaver

There are exhibits for black and grizzly bear, but no activity this time of year, of course.

Did see this black bear though.

The playful pair of river otters were fun to watch

A bobcat peers out from under a shelter

A wolverine was wandering about in it's exhibit.

These are pretty rare in Washington.

A 2020 sighting of a wolverine near Mt. Rainier was a first in nearly a century.
