Walk 11/13 Fort Worden & Port Townsend
From Fort Worden, just outside Port Townsend, spotting the ferry coming in from Whidbey Island
Alexander Castle, the first building in the area, dates back to 1883 and still stands
Several nice forests trails traversed the park
Remains of the many gun batteries that were constructed. Over 3 dozen of these were built, but they never fired a hostile shot
Several nice overlooks were encountered along the bluffs above the beach. Here, we're looking north toward the San Juan Islands about 25 miles distant
Point Wilson Lighthouse is spotted from one of the overlooks
Interpretive signage helps explain the working of the gun batteries
No guns remain at the fort, but a photo here shows what they looked like
Overlooking the campus of military buildings at Fort Worden. Some of the old building are still used for visitors and various events
Descending to the flats along the beach
A lone fir tree stands boldly against the elements. We had a brisk 25 mph wind while walking around the lighthouse point
