Hike 7/20 Elwha River - Glines Canyon Overlook
Madison Falls is a 3-minute detour from the Elwha Trailhead

Wispy cirrus clouds decorated the sky over the Elwha Valley

Walking in forest alongside the river

On the Whiskey Bend Road, which used to lead to the Elwha Trailhead

Walking out onto the top of the former dam. We had hiked to the viewpoint on the opposite side last year.

Remnants of the dam, removed 12 years ago now.

The Elwha River flowing through the former reservoir. A dense forest has now covered much of the old lake bottom

Looking upstream and down, from the old dam

Alder forest typical of what's grown back since 2014

Returning down Whiskey Bend Road

Eye-catching colors on the Herb Robert

Maidenhair fern growing thickly on the roadside

This fallen signpost marks the old trail that leads up to Hurricane Ridge from the Elwha Valley

The boarded-up ranger station is no longer in use, due to the road being severed downvalley

Other National Park Service buildings have also been rendered unusable by the road closure

Walking past old growth giants

Bridge washout on the Elwha

We passed the home of the park services' trail crew mules
