Hike 4/9 Ginkgo Petrified Forest

Nice displays at the Ginkgo Interpretive trail tell all about the formation and discovery of the petrified wood samples.

About 20 petrified wood samples are found along the trail, identified by tree type.

Caged enclosures protect the specimens from human beings.

How the petrified forest can to be. It's a long story, 15 million years in the making

Hiking up to the plateau. I-90 bridge in the distance over the Columbia

Our group was basking in the sunshine, for a while at least

Fields of tiny mustard plants gave the hillsides a yellow tinge.

Looking to the southeast out across the Columbia at distant hills
Views from the plateau

Mountain sheep are hard to spot, be we saw several meandering the rocky cliffs

Hiking through the sagebrush

Balsamroot, the signature flower over there in the spring

Wild Horses Monument, on a ridge east of the Columbia River.
