Hike 12/7 Frenchman Coulee (Alternate for Snowshoe Gold Creek)
My dedicated group of hikers who came today, ready for anything.
Overlooking Echo Basin, just east of the Columbia River
Basalt columns make fascinating patterns, and are popular with rock climbers when the weather's nice
Hiking the sagebrush country along the top of the coulee
Freezing rain coated the van with a thin layer of ice on the drive over there
Hiking into Frenchman Coulee, toward the falls
The basalt columns resemble crinkle-cut french fries
The sun makes a feeble attempt to break out
The falls are a seasonal feature that comes and goes depending on the time of year.
I hiked up close to the base of the fall to see the frozen vegetation around it. Temps stayed close to 32 degrees there.
...a lawn mower? Unfortunately, a lot of illegal dumping has taken place in spots around the coulee
Rock formations were endlessly fascinating
The coulee walls, here looking like a row of teeth
One last look at the falls from the access road
